STAGES I Quincy, 111., July 6.—Baldwin, the &er «maut, outdid all previous iwrformuiices in his great jump here on the Fourth, which proved more than was ox|>ected or ailveriised. The high wind which prevailed during the day delayed the ascension of the balloon and bid fair to pi event the jump, thousands silled. _ .. Baldwin, so shortly after four o’clock hr entered the tiasket. The lines were cut and “The City of Quincy” rose sluggishly bearing eastward. Aa she rose higher she trimmed nicely and when well up Baldwin began hi* préparât ions for his leap. He pulled the slack out of the lines of his parachute and left them alone. His every movement was watched with the keenest iuteiest. When the balloon passed two thousand feet the crowd gave up, mid had Baldwin n t continued to work at his parachute he might have gone to the dogs for all the crowd cared. The lutllooti had reached an altitude of nearly five thousand feet when the white parachute again fluttered. The balloon shot upward, and it liecauie evident that B ildwin had juinfied. For a hundred i and fifty feet he came down like the stick of a rocket. The ;*arachute did not seem to answer the aeronaut's call, for he continued to desc *nd another hundred feet before it gave evidence of filling. The air seemed to catch it and the velocity of the aeronaut apfieared to decrease. During the first few seconds of the descent the crowd held their breath and «•illy when the spi ed was slackened did it think of applause. The plucky Baldwin's fiat in all its magnitude broke in on them and the thousands who a moment before were ready to pronounce Baldwin a fraud opened their mouths in prolonged shouts of applause. The descent was made in three and a half minute , landing the aeronaut in a wheat field, two miles from the |wdut in Singleton Park from which he made the ascent Baldwin was almost overcome by the descent, and but for the timely arrival of friends with stimulants would have been prostrated Baldwin says that he never will re;aat the jump from such an altitude, and those who saw the jump are ready enough to believe it. It was a terrible leap, and the remembrance of it will never be lost by Baldwin or any who saw saw it. Baldwin became an athlete ten years Ago, and during the most of that time lived in San Francisco. His feat of today Ktnni|>8 him the most daring man of his generation. It consists of a sounding apjMtrattts to which vibrations will l»e imparted by steam whistles. The vibrations can be transmitted through the wa or about tewn miles, and can be heani by any vessel provided with a o«nies|H»mling apparat us which happen within that district. New York, July H. - A morning paper says Thomas A. Edison w as in Philadel phia yesterday and told about his latest discovery by which messages can lietransmitted troin ship to ship by of steam whistles opoiated by keys much like the telegraph instrument, experiments so far have liven confined to the waters of the Cal» ea imtihie where he has succeeded in carrying an intelligible \ message a distance of one mile. The | principle on which he will endeavor to perfect his exjwriineiit is the remarkable' facility afforded by water transmitting sound. Divert in the ocean have heard the swish of a steamer's wheels when fifteen miles away and Edison thinks he can transmit his message from ship to shi| distance of at least seven miles.
