The cattle Hostesses contributed greatly to the Cattle Show, the Light Horse Hostess was on hand to present ribbons throughout the Fair, the Steer Hostess was very deeply involved with the Steer Feeding Club show, and of course Patricia Hodgins, Miss Shawnlk Fair, proved a charming and delightful chief Hostess at various Official Occasions and during the Variety Show Sunday evening. Above, she is seated with the Hon Wm Tetley, Provincial Minister of Financial Institutions at the Official Opening of the Fair, Friday night. Mr Tetley had taken the opportunity to visit throughout the County and came back with the opinion that this is one beautiful area. He also was Impressed by the excellence of the Rtir and said "Happy Birthday to Shawville» you're looking quite young for your age. He also stated that this Community must be improved by better roads. Andai Photo. BCA B*-. AWARD FOR HIGHEST MILK PRODUCTION An anonymous donor or donors sent in a substantial cash prize to be awarded to the cow exhibited at this years Shawville Fair of any breed with the highest Breed Class average in milk production. An Ayrshire cow in the exhibit of W Ronald Mac-Kechnie & Sons of Bonnieshade Farm, Grampian Lucky Lady declared the winner of this prize, having a junior four year old record of .... 21,711 lbs of milk in 305 days with a BCA of 262 per cent. Lucky Lady is classified "Excellent" and had Just been placed second in the dry cow class. Surely these figures dispel any doubts that show cows can not be high producers as well. It was a first for Shawville, a first for the Ottawa Valley, and as the Auctioneer reminded us, it was also a high pri anywhere a round, even Ottawa whose prize steer came nowhere near that price. The purchasers of these Steer Feeding Club animals are all community minded citizens who know the importance of encouraging the young farmers of this area and who know how to do it. It weighed 949, and the purchaser was Shawville's Motel Operators, Ed and Ellen Connoly of the Ed and Ellen Motel and Restaurant on Highway 8. 1048, and bought by jean-Guy Larivlere, MNA, of Campbell's Bay, maybe for his wife's new restaurant there. Bilingualism board visited Shawville and Fort Coulonge *¦ : / t Perhaps the main thing the information gathering committee of the Bilingual Districts Advisory Board will learn as it travels around Canada is that to make one law about language which will cover all Canada is going to be hard. r Even though we hear them saying that the situation here is "just like" somewhere else, we must hope they have noticed that it is not. However, whatever they have noticed while they visited Pontiac County may not have any bearing on the decisions of the Government because they are the second such boara and the advice of the first one was ignored It was a good group of interested people who came to Shawville and Fort Coulonge last Thursday and listened to the few people who had time to visit their Committee. At Shawville everyone who came understood English and the meeting was conducted entirely in English. At Fort Coulonge most of those attending could understand French and the meeting was conducted entirely in French. Questions were asked at both places about second guage training. As far the Federal Government is concerned, language training by them would be limited to Federal employees, according to the Advisory Board. Boundaries of a proposed bilingual district were discussed. The only strong opinion on that subject was VT well at seven r I r V5 L 1 -, :ü that the area should be Pontiac County, the municipal entity, not the ever changing provincial and federal ridings. It was stated by the Board that the boundaries could be changed after the district was officially designated as bilingual. A great deal of discussion about just what a bilingual district would be revealed the fact that where a bilingual district is declared, everyone there has a much easier time being unilingual, at least as far as contact with the Federal Government Offices within that district. Some of the mayors have been asked such questions as "Will we all have to be bilingual if the Pontiac is designated as a .bilingual District?" Once more, to emphasize, it was stresse) by the Board that nothing could be further from the truth. * > / j/ 7/y ¥ Ï I Nancv Tubman, Hostess for the Pontiac Steer Club, well a6k to describe the various beef breeds and the Andai Photo. If you have a bilingual district proclaimed by the Federal Government it means one thing and one thing only. It means that employees at principal offices of the Federal Government within the area must be able to carry on business in both French and English. So that the individual citizen, whether he wants to speak English French, can manage without knowing the other language. There is no definition of “principal offices” known to the commissioners of bilingual districts who have been circulating about Canada information tour. It is not likely that a small post office in a tiny municipality where almost everyone speaks only one language would be considered a principal office. In Pontiac County, outside of the Post Offices, there is only one Federal employee who comes to mind and that is Danny Ryan at the Manpower Office in Campbell’s Bay. As this is just a branch of the Hull Manpower office it probably isn’t a * “principal office" either but for the present it doesn’t matter because Dan. ny can get along in English and French Junior Champion Male-anyway R MacKechnie & Sons. This machine first became available to use in treatment of eye diseases in 1970 and already medical researchers are lauding its usefulness in conserving sight. The machine makes use of an old principal that light can burn. As children most of us can remember burning a hole in a piece of paper with the light from the sun properly focused through a magnifying glass. This machine contains a very bright green light within its works and through a set of mirror* shutters and lenses the light is directed at disease in the eye under micro scopic control by the Eye Surgeon. As the surgeon directs the light from the machine, burns of microscopic size take place in the retina of the patient's eye at the back. The retina is like the film in a camera. Many patients unfortunately are seen so late in their disease that little can be done and the doctors point tlie continued importance of early detection of these problems by regular eye examinations. One words it this way: "it is easy to put out a fire when it is first detected but more difficult after it has burned out of control. The same is true of many eye diseases". Since the Lions Clubs first installed the Argon laser in August of 1972 several hundred treatments have been performed on patients who live in the District it serves. Many of these have been saved from blindness and its accompanying miseries. One such patient in a letter of thanks to the Lions Clubs says " I am now able to read quite readily without glasses, and have hopes that my eyesight will improve still further. Wednesday September 19. 1973 Page 10 THE EQUITY The Consumer Protection Act gives a broader meaning to the definition of door-to-door salesmen : ifnr* salesman solicits you elsewhere than at his business office, in order to sell you something, he is considered a door-to-door salesman. * * This is the reason the law uses the expression " itinerant vendor . In this brochure we use the expression " dour-to door salesman because, In general, the " itinerant vendor " is a door-to door salesman, or canvasser. If someone knocks at your door... FOLLOW THESE GOLDEN RULES WHEN DEALING WITH A DOOR-TO-DOOR SALESMAN. # No matter what the salesman says, you are ALWAYS bound by your signature. # Never sign on impulse . Ask the salesman to give you a copy of the contract so you may think It over ; If he refuses, it's probably because you are on the verge of closing a bad deal. # Check if the date inscribed on the contract is that of the day you signed it. # Be sure you understand everything in your contract : the duration of your commitment, the actual cost of the obligation you are incurring, and so forth. • See that all the features of the product you are buying are indicated in the contract : model, color, serial number if any, etc... e Always keep a duplicate of your contract. • The salesman should always sign before you do. e Be aware of what it may cost you when you sign. Above all, never believe you can cancel a contract by simply phoning your bank to stop the cheque given to the door-to-door salesman with whom you did business. The Consumer Protection Act, assented to July 14, 1971, has many provisions aimed at protecting the consumer who commits himself to buy from a salesman who solicits him. There are several exceptions to EXCEPTION the Act ; the most important concerns the sale of new automobiles WHY SUCH PROVISIONS ? These provisions abusive practices of some salesmen towards consumers and also for the following reasons : # when salesmen come calling, the consumer usually has no intention of buying the merchandise being offered him ; # he could make a purchase he will regret later on ; # while there are honest door-to-door salesmen, there are also those who should not be trusted. The itinerant vendor : Generally speaking, he is one who goes from door to door offering to consumers such items as cosmetics, electrical appliances, magazines, encyclopedias, carpets, floor coverings, water softeners, tombstones, and so forth ... a salesman takes steps to sell you had become necessary due to EXAMPLE a new automobile elsewhere than at his business office ; if he has you sign a contract at his office, he is not a door-to-door salesman. WHEN A DOOR-TO-DOOR SALESMAN COMES CALLING Insist immediately on seeing his representative's card. The representative s card This card is not a guarantee of the honesty of the salesman nor of the quality of the merchandise he is offering. This certifies that his employer has a permit from the Consumer Protection Bureau and that he is covered by a surety which protects the consumer if the door-to-door salesman or his representative breaks the law. Besides, it permits you to identify the representative. It should never be used as a sales pitch. equity classifieds GET FAST RESULTS! You may also return the goods to the salesman's address You may use both methods, which is preferable. How long do you have ? The contract you have signed may be cancelled within five days after getting your own copy. Saturdays. Sundays and holidays are excluded from this five-day delay. However, the amount of the contract must exceed S25. EXAMPLE Tuesday and the same day you received a duplicate. The first day of the delay will be used up Wednesday ; consequently, if Saturday and Sunday are not included you have until the following Tuesday inclusively to send your registered letter or return the goods to the salesman's address. The contract is " lawfully " cancelled the moment you return the merchandise or the moment you send the notice. In the latter case, the salesman and the consumer have seven days to return whatever was received from each other. The information here for consumers has been contributed to THE EQUITY by the Hon VV m Tetley who is the Minister of Financial Institutions and Consumer Affairs. Mr Tetley toured Pontiac County last week and officia 11 y opened Sh a w vi 1 le s _17th annual Agricultural Exhibition, the Shaw ville Fair. HI You have signed a contract t 1 WANTED TO BUY RECONSIDERATION PERIOD The Consumer Protection Act grants a thinking over period after concluding a contract with a door to door salesman. During that period you may cancel the contract at your own discretion. How to cancel a contract You may do so in writing.
