Presenting a brief on behalf of the Farmers Union (UPA of Pontiac) and the Citizens Committee was James Stewart. A brief was also prepared by the Municipal Council to be directed to the Minister, the Hon Guy Tardiff. The briefs reiterated reasons why Pontiac should be out of the Outaouais Regional Government. No reply from the government has been received as yet. One suggestion at the meeting was a possibility of splitting the Outaouais into rural and urban sections. The briefs sought a return to the same status as any other municipality in the County of Pontic. We all know, however, of someone who is alive because of medical treatment, by surgery, cobalt bomb or chemotherapy. Early diagnosis makes this possible. What we forget is that diagnosis and treatment is made possible through the ceaseless research by doctors and scientists. This expensive process is largely supported by funds from the Canadian Cancer Society. The Canadian Cancer Society in turn gets these funds from money donated by concerned everyday Canadians who aware of the valuable work done by dedicated researchers. The Shawville Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society would like to thank publicly all whose donations helped make this year's canvass the best ever since taken over by the Young People’s groups of the Pentecostal and United Churches. Many thanks to these willing volunteers. Thanks also to the business men of the community and a local service club who donated so generously to the drive. We appreciate also the publicity provided by THE EQUITY in the form of a picture and timely editorial, both of which added impetus to the drive. Mulligan Hunting is a privilege not a right! Ted Christie, Chairman, Shawville Branch Canadian Cancer Society. si/if Grist and miscellaneous items Chester Walsh celebrated his 92nd birthday on October 2nd. Mr Walsh and his wife the former Irene Mac Dowell and their son Kenny have lived in Shawville since he retired from farming in Clarendon. Another son, Herrald, liv London, Ontario. Third in the running for the bronze medal in Agricultural Merit was Ronald MacKechnie of Wyman. Along with George Pine who came first, these were the only two Pontiac farmers to qualify for the honor. It is interesting to note that both Ron and George are school trustees on the Pontiac Protestant School Board as well. Hunting on private property depends on the landower and his permission. A license to hunt doesn't include the right to trespass. Every hunter owes a debt to the landowner whose lands produce a large part of the game crop. The hunter these lands only as a guest of the owner. When one hunter forgets this relationship, the landowner will post the land against all hunters. If the landowner seems adament in the protection of his private property it is because his livelihood is at stake, he is concerned about the safety of his family and his personal possessions. The hunter, as a guest, should behave exactly as he would expect that landowner to behave on the hunter's private property, be it a house in town, an apartment, a farm, or whatever. While the hunter is on someone’s private property he is fully responsible for all the results of his being there. Hunting areas are lost to everyone each time one hunter abuses his privilege. To hunt on a person’s property the permission of the owner must always be obtained first. When a landowner designates one part of his property as out of bounds to hunters, this must be respected and hunting dogs as well as hunters must stay out of these areas. Fences and gates must always be left in good condition and as they were found. If climbing fence or gate weakens it, this must be repaired, or the landowner should be notified with an offer by the hunter to pay for the repairs. Then there is the business of crops and fruit. If a hunter wants to take some of these for himself he is no more than a common thief unless he asks permission first and then pays for what he takes. The hunter should stay out of fields where people working, or where crops are standing or ii^ the swath, should not shoot towards buildings, machinery, stock or people, should not dump rubbish, should clean up the area where they have stopped to eat or camp, should take fire precautions and never build a fire without specific permission for a fire. If the hunter is successful he should always offer to share his game with the landowner on whose property it has been bagged. Many good hunters remember the landowners at Christmas with a card. Just such a simple act is appreciated as a friendly gesture. Hunters who observe these civilized behaviour patterns welcomed by most landowners. The hunter who marches past all barriers, assuming rights on private property which have not been granted by the owner, make the whole sport odious to more people each year. There is no such thing as a divine right of hunters whereas on the other hand the person who has bought property has every right to protect it as he sees Mr Ira Merrifîeld Mr Ira Merrifîeld will be 90 years old on October 19, 1978. competed in the Belleville He has lived all his life in Upper Eardley. Many people have become interested in discovering their “roots" and the genealogists are doing a fine business. I suspect that I may have found mine and am not radiantly happy about either set of ancestors. If you are sensitive and subject to ego wounds, do not read Zecharia Sitchin's book The 12th Planet", and you had better stop reading this -right here! After thirty years of study, learning the languages, history and archeology of the ancient Near East, the author presents what he feels certain were the beliefs of people in Sumerian and later times, but please remember, beliefs are not necessarily facts! He states that Genesis in your Bible is merely a very brief summary of tales from earlier civilisations and due to its brevity, confusing. If you accept the “gods'* and “angels'* of myth and legend to be merely an assorted group of scientifically advanced astronauts who were sent to Earth from a planet in our solar system which “seeded" Earth in ancient times, and who thousands of years later “created" hcmosapiens “in their imaage" by genetic manipulation of a native species (homo erect us), akin to the “gods" hut i evolution) for the purpoee of providing Primitive Workers restriction and Adam creatures could be quickly destroyed (or improved?) if later found to be unsuitable, uncontrolled reproduction was the “original sin" committed by one group of the gods. Virgin births, often reported in ancient times, have a suitable explanation. Take one young, primitive female who has not “known man, plant in her womb a genetically treated ova, and hopefully a virgin gives birth. Our scientists use animals for research experiments. Try to image what they would do with those elusive and possibly non-existent Sasquatches if some of them were captured. It seems that the old gods were doing likewise with the animal homo erecturs. out but hopefully stupid enough not to realise the true state of affairs, you have the gist of Sitchin’s research. Whether the beliefs of people who lived five or six thousand years ago contained any truth is quite unimportant. What is important, according to the author, is that modern religions have re interpreted the old beliefs, changing those far from perfect “gods into the Almighty, Creator of the Universe, possibly due to the fact that by A.D. 100 or thereabouts up to the 20th century very few people believed that flying from one planet to another was possible. Only now, with moon landings a reality and the advances in science, especially genetics, approaching knowledge of the old “gods", can the tales be properly understood. You will hive noticed the emphasis on gold and silver as offerings to the Lord in the Old Testament, ending with HaggHi i, verse 8: The silver Is mine and the gold is mine, saith t he Ix>rd of hosts. The old text# make it clear that mining was one of the main reasons for the gods being sent to Kar t h V\ as there a shortage of precious metals on their home planet? So- evolution or special creation? The ancients appear to have believed in both. If there is any truth in these old texts, no wonder, with that sudden boost up the evolution ladder, losing the experience attained by the slow processes of nature, we seek our identities, forever asking: "Who am I? Why am I here?" Our Ugh! Discrimination against "inferior" rices so common in history becomes understandable. Refer to Genesis 6. When homoeapiens became numerous on Earth, some of the gods selected attractive daughters of mankind, and genetically compatible, produced children by them, “the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." Did these unions upgrade groups of mankind? Were kings and priests, supervised by the god bosses, selected from this superior group? Does this explain the "divine right of kings" and possibly even "apostolic succession"? our I was astonished to discover that all the childish questions, considered sacrilegious and unnecessary by my elders, answered. Original sin had nothing to do with the creation of mankind but was an accusation hurled by one group of "gods" at another group who, motivated by revenge, enlightened the Primitive Workers and encouraged them to rebel. Apparently, homoeapiens were meant to reproduce their own kind only when the need for more slaves become apparent. By this The author is not an atheist. He feels that his book m enhance rather than diminish faith in a Universal Almighty, for, if those “sons of the gods" crested mankind, they have only been fulfilling a vaster Master Plan. Now you may go and take an aspirin. JOHN MacGREGOR the Adina Rebekah Lodge No. 40, Shawville and sponsored a style show In their Lodge Hall on Monday, September 26th. Styles in smart ensembles of warm autumn colours, cocktail dresses in the newest muted florale, graceful evening gowns, and the soft pastels of boudoir wear, all with footwear to match, from sandals fragile as cobwebs to warm toned casual wedgies, were modelled by seven lovely ladies, to the delight of the large number present. The styles were from Kay's Style Shop and Barbara's Shoes. A lovely arrangement of chrysanthemums from Hardy's Flower Shop, outlined the podium, where the models paraded and pirouetted. Under the able direction of committee members Muriel Imison, Liz Stranacher and Inez Maheral, the event was carefully planned and those present had a treat for the eyes, and new ideas for what is in store in the fashion world. Noble Grand Myrtle Barber welcomed the guests, and Helen Dale convened the committee serving the refreshments which followed the show. Phoebe McCord was commentator for the smart or elegant, and often practical fashions, displayed, with further credit going to Shirley Munro and Barbara Cruickshanka. Danford Lake on Sunday, September 17th. He was 44, the Mhf| beloved husband of Lucille Myles, dear father of Joanne and Kirk and Myles and Blair, dear son of Mr and Mrs Albert The death of Robert HAROLD Edward Davis occurred accidentally at Brindlewood on Friday afternoon September 15, Lack of lime is often the first limiting factor for crop production in our Quebec soils. Applying lime can give a better return per dollar investment than almost any other farm investment. Lime is applied to soil to reduce soil acidity, that is to achieve a pH of between 6.0 and 7.0. The pH is a measure of whether a substance is acid, neutral or basic. Water which is neutral has a pH of 7.0, substance leas than 7.0 are acid aid over 7.0 are bask. Why is it desirable to have a pH of between 6.0 and 7.0. Of 68,000 soil analysis done in the LaPocatère, Québec, laboratory from 1871-77, 80% required lime. The pH level affects the availability of essential elements to plants, in other words, using the same amount of fertilizer on two separate fields, a field with pH 66 will give a much higher yield than a field of pH 5.5. (when considering forage and crops, certain horticultural crops require a pH of less than 6.0) Another major benefit of lime is it reduces the solubility of aluminium and manganese in the soil. These two elements if present even in very low concentrations are toxic to plants. The library has nearly 87,000 volumes, including superb treasures, and is housed at the headquarters of the nonprofit American Bible Society in New York City. One of the library's annual chores is the preparation of an annual Scripture language count. The latest count re reals that at least one book of the Bible has been translated into 1,631 languages or dialects, representing the spoken tongues of 98 percent of the world's people. With a staff of nine, the ABS library answers information requests from museums, public libraries, seminary libraries and other related institutions as well as from the general public. Among the treasures in the Scripture library are 423 year 1 printed in Switzerland in 1474 ... a Wycliffe New Testament manuscript from about 1440 ... and a 13th century Latin Vulgate manuscript Bible. Many Bibles closely related to the history of the United States are in the library, including a copy of the very first Bible published in America : a 1663 edition in the Massachusetts dialect of the Algonquin Indians. The library has a copy of the first English Bible printed in America, and an even earlier German-language Scripture printed by a German born physician, Christopher Saur, to provide the Word to the Pennsylvania German community ("the Pennsylvania Dutch") in colonial days. Here one may view such rarities as the Kai Peng Pu Pentateuch Scroll, used by a Jewish community in 16th century China. An illuminated Amharic manuscript was presented to the library in 1969 by the then Emperor of Ethiopie, Haile Selassie. The "Hefty Hawaiian" is the first Hawaiian Bible which, due to the limitations of available paper, is wider than it is high. A sentimental favorite of many visitors is a pair of Testaments which belonged to David Livingstone the great 19th century Scottish missionary, in the Tlapi Set •wans language of South Africa. The Library Is open to visitors Monday through, Friday from 9:30 to 4:30. It is located at 1866 Broadway, at the comer of 61st Street, in New York City. 1967 BUICK LE SABRE 2 dr.
