By the way people were strolling into the building, it may have resembled a packed bingo hall. In fact, the queue outside was longer than any bingo line-up I have ever seen. What is it that is drawing a crowd larger than the famous cottage Friday night bingo's? Many things are definitely missing here that are found in the bingo hall. There are smiles here, no smoke clinging to the walls or great puffs of smoke rising to the ceiling, no shouts or giggling, no cool refreshments of either cool crisp coke or tangy orange pop, no swearing, no "Under the no BINGO! It was the place to socialise, catch up on all gossip, hear a good joke, see some pal of yours (he is bound to be there), hear about the latest practical joke Louie is planning to hit on one of his favourites. Yours truly, Lois McCann Kens ley Campbell's Bay, Quebec My stomach became suddenly weak when I realized where I was, and worst of all, why. This is the country church, only a little over a half mile from the general store “Louie's" which had as much character as any person. I am shivering now, thinking of the old slabs of two-by-four nailed up on Louie's store. If Louie did not own the store, then no-one could! Well...they would sure as hell not get my business. This summer, and from now on, will never be the same! How could it be? There is no way it could be like the several previous summers. Something is missing, there at the cottage, and now in my heart ,.. The only life Louie really had—rather, really saw—was his store, the small path to his house, and his house. Both the house and the store were not what one would call tidy! But that did not matter any more. I still remember those summers when we went for evening walks or bike rides to Louie's store for a soft ice cream cone, with the delicious tasty chocolate dip that was even more enjoyable when the dip was still warm. Chatting with the locals on the weather-beaten bench out in front of Louie's was always a gas! It was the place to go for a cold pop after the baseball Yes, I am shivering on the hottest day of June now. Who will get all those boxes full of unopened bills, Christmas and birthday cards (to think now, Louie never got that Christmas card I sent him, to thank him for offering and giving me enjoyable summer working in his store!) and unopened gifts. Louie was ready at any time to do anything for anybody in an à need i Why is it no one saw his half of the story...we will never know now...God I feel so hurt and helpless! But somehow the two communities do not project a “city” image. They still have the “feel” of a small town. Perhaps that is why Waterloo became home to two rapidly-growing universities in the early nineteen sixties, and why seven or eight thousand young people decided to spend several years of their lives there. The larger of the two universities, the University of Waterloo, was a beehive of activity in those days as men and machines worked year-round to add building after building to a rapidly-expanding campus. For most of the academic year, there were students detouring around great excavations and walking planks across the mud to get to classes. But toward the end of April with final exams behind them, most students disappeared to the towns and cities they had come from, leaving the campus to the ready mix trucks and the bulldozers. Only a few students remained, usually those with no summer job to go to. One year a young man named Grant was one of those students. Grant’s father was a farmer. For many years Grant had simply spent his summers helping on the farm. But his father could not afford to pay him very much, and attending university was expensive. This particular year, Grant had decided that he really needed to find a summer job to allow him to cover his university expenses in the fall. There were very few jobs to be had—either back in his home area or here in Waterloo. So far, Grant had not managed to find one. He was a friendly, outgoing person who worked hard at everything he did; but he had very little previous job experience, and his major in university was sociology. Apparently no one needed a sociology major for any position. It seemed as if he would have to accept the fact that he would be unemployed. Then one day he happened to be reading the campus newspaper when an advertisement caught his attention: "Summer employment opportunity for students, in the educational field.” There was a phone number with the ad, so he called it, and the next day he found himself w a job interview. "Yes", the interviewer was telling . him, "I think you are just the man for the job". Grant was hired the spot. But the job was not quite what he had expected. Working in the “educational field” turned out to be selling encyclopedias, door-to-door. Right from the start Grant had some reservations about it. Not that the job was difficult; and not that he was afraid he would not be able to succeed at it. But there was something about the method he was taught to use that bothered him. As a salesman, he would not be allowed to discuss the product with the customer in the way he might wish: there was a specific “pitch" he was to use. There was even a training course in the method, a course which he reluctantly completed.
